India has made a historic leap in global higher education visibility, with 54 institutions featured in the QS World University Rankings 2026—its highest-ever representation. Topping the Indian list is the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, which climbed to 123rd globally, overtaking IIT Bombay for the first time in eight years.

IIT Delhi’s rise is attributed to strong performance in Employer Reputation (50th globally), Citations per Faculty (86th), and Academic Reputation (142nd). Meanwhile, IIT Madras made headlines by jumping 47 spots to enter the global for the first time. India is now the fourth most represented country in the QS rankings, trailing only the US, UK, and China. Notably, eight Indian universities debuted in the rankings this year, the highest number of new entries from any country. This surge reflects India’s growing academic influence and investment in research, innovation, and global collaboration.
