CD Projekt Red has confirmed that The Witcher 4 will target 60 frames per second on current-generation consoles, including the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. However, the studio acknowledged that achieving this performance on the less powerful Xbox Series S will be “extremely challenging.” In a recent interview with Digital Foundry, Charles Tremblay, CDPR’s Vice President of Technology, explained that while the team is committed to delivering a smooth experience across platforms, the hardware limitations of the Series S—particularly its reduced memory and GPU power—pose significant hurdles. “Let’s just say this is something we need to figure out,” Tremblay said candidly. The studio showcased a tech demo of The Witcher 4 running at 60 FPS on a base PS5 using Unreal Engine 5, though they clarified it was not representative of final gameplay. The game is still in early development and is not expected to release before 2027, giving the team time to optimize performance across all platforms. This shift to a console-first development strategy marks a departure from CDPR’s traditional PC-first approach, a move likely influenced by the troubled launch of Cyberpunk 2077. With The Witcher 4, the studio is aiming for a polished, high-performance experience from day one—though the Series S may require some creative compromises.
