Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai has called for urgent action to address deep-rooted social and economic disparities, stating that no nation can claim to be truly democratic without ending inequality. Speaking at an event in Milan titled “Role of Constitution in Delivering Socio-Economic Justice”, CJI Gavai emphasized that justice must be more than an abstract principle—it must be embedded in the lived realities of people. He argued that socio-economic justice is not just a moral ideal but a practical necessity for long-term stability, social cohesion, and sustainable development. “It’s not merely about redistribution or welfare,” he said, “but about enabling every individual to live with dignity and participate equally in society.” Reflecting on the Indian Constitution’s 75-year journey, Gavai praised its framers for embedding a vision of inclusion and transformation. He credited affirmative action policies—especially in education—for helping correct historical injustices and ensuring representation for marginalized communities. In a deeply personal moment, the Chief Justice acknowledged his own background, saying, “I am a product of the very constitutional ideals that sought to democratize opportunity and dismantle the barriers of caste and exclusion.” He also highlighted the Constitution’s evolving role in expanding socio-economic rights, citing recent judicial interventions that protect civil liberties and uphold the right to shelter. Gavai concluded by reaffirming that law can be a powerful tool for empowerment and social change, provided it is wielded with vision and compassion.
