Ahead of iPhone 17 launch, Apple puts iPhone XS on the vintage list and makes iPad 5 obsolete

The iPhone XS, once Apple’s flagship device, has now been officially designated as “vintage” by the company. This classification indicates that the device is no longer sold through Apple’s official channels and has surpassed the five-year mark since its discontinuation in 2019 .Under Apple’s vintage policy, products are eligible for repair services at Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers, but only as long as replacement parts remain available . At that point, Apple will cease all hardware support for the device, regardless of parts availability The iPhone XS, launched in September 2018, has now been officially designated as a “vintage” product by Apple. This classification occurs when a device has not been sold by Apple for more than five but less than seven years. This classification means that while repairs may still be available through Apple Stores and Authorized Service Providers, they are contingent upon the availability of replacement parts. Once a device is labeled vintage, it typically remains eligible for service for up to two more years, after which it becomes obsolete and is no longer supported by Apple. The iPhone XS Max, the larger counterpart to the XS, was added to Apple’s vintage list earlier, in November 2024 . Both models were introduced in September 2018 as incremental upgrades over the iPhone X, featuring the A12 Bionic chip, enhanced cameras, and dual SIM support .The fifth-generation iPad, released in March 2017, has been officially designated as obsolete by Apple as of June 2025. This status change signifies that Apple has ceased all hardware service and support for this model, regardless of parts availability. While the iPad 5 will continue to function, users should be aware that it will no longer receive software updates, including critical security patches. This lack of updates may lead to compatibility issues with newer applications and potential security vulnerabilities over time.
