Mumbai-based filmmaker Payal Kapadia returned to the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, not only as a jury member but also as a style icon, showcasing her refined and understated fashion sense. Following her Grand Prix win in 2024 for All We Imagine As Light, Kapadia’s presence was highly anticipated. At the jury photocall, she donned a distinctive ensemble that reflected her authentic self. The outfit, crafted from handwoven silk and styled by Indrakshi Pattanaik, consisted of a structured yet flowing red skirt paired with a relaxed blue shirt. This was one of two looks she showcased that day—the other being a creation from the label Rishta by Arjun Saluja.In an interview with Mid-Day, designer Payal Khandwala shared insights into the ensemble’s creation: “Crafted from handwoven silk in our signature jewel tones, the outfit balances structure with fluidity. Its subtle sheen adds a touch of understated luxury and drama. Interestingly, the colors coincidentally mirror those of the French flag, though this was not a deliberate choice.”The attire resonated with filmmaker Payal Kapadia’s minimalist approach to fashion. Khandwala noted, “She gravitated towards pieces that spoke to her—bold yet minimalistic designs with architectural lines that exude strength while ensuring comfort.”“As women, we possess an intrinsic understanding of our bodies—what we choose to showcase and what we prefer to keep private.
