Know about the first medical college of Gujarat – BJ Medical College, Ahmedabad

Founded in 1871 as the Ahmedabad Medical School, it began with just 14 students working as hospital assistants under the Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad. In 1879, a generous donation of ₹20,000 from Sir Byramjee Jeejeebhoy led to its renaming as B.J. Medical School.The institution steadily advanced its credentials, affiliating in 1917 with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Bombay, and in 1946 with Bombay University, transitioning into B.J. Medical College and offering the L.C.P.S. diploma. Affiliation with Gujarat University (1951–Present) In 1951, undergraduate courses were brought under Gujarat University. By 1956, postgraduate programs also became part of Gujarat University’s curriculum. Since then, Gujarat University has guided the institution’s academic direction, fostering its development in both medical and paramedical education. Contemporary Developments and Impact Currently integrated into MEDICITY, the college operates alongside premier institutions including Civil Hospital, M&J Institute of Ophthalmology, U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre, and Gujarat Cancer Research Institute. Medical College now offers postgraduate education in 24 medical disciplines and super-specialty training in 11 fields. It has made significant strides in medical research, collaborating with bodies like the ICMR, and achieved global recognition from WHO for pioneering integrated teaching in pediatric health and universal immunization. Its alumni network has a worldwide presence, delivering distinguished medical services across the globe.
