Low Pressure Area Forms & Likely To Intensify; Heavy Rain To Batter Odisha

A low-pressure system has developed over southwestern Bangladesh and the neighboring Gangetic West Bengal region, influenced by a cyclonic circulation. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this system formed early Tuesday morning and is anticipated to intensify while moving west-northwestward within the next 24 hours. As a result, Odisha is expected to experience widespread rainfall over the next three days, with the southwest monsoon strengthening and advancing further into the state and adjoining areas of Chhattisgarh. The IMD has issued forecasts for moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts, including Sundargarh, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Mayurbhanj, and Balasore. June 18 (Wednesday): An orange warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, and Sundargarh, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall. Yellow warnings are in place for districts including Jharsuguda, Deogarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Sambalpur, Angul, Dhenkanal, and Bargarh. June 19 (Thursday): Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Keonjhar and Sundargarh, with yellow warnings for Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak. June 20 (Friday): Heavy rainfall is likely in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Keonjhar, and Mayurbhanj. The IMD advises residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain alert, avoid waterlogged zones, and stay updated with official advisories. Fishermen are cautioned against venturing into the sea along and off the Odisha coast from June 17 to 19 due to squally weather with wind speeds reaching 40–50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h.Rainfall activity is expected to persist until June 19, with the potential for extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas. Authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and prepared for any emergencies resulting from intense rains and strong winds.
