Minnesota assassination survivor and husband shot 17 times

On June 14, 2025, a tragic and politically motivated attack occurred in Minnesota, targeting two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses. State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot at their home in Brooklyn Park. Shortly before, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were attacked at their residence in Champlin; both sustained multiple gunshot wounds but survived after undergoing surgery. The suspect, 57-year-old Vance Luther Boelter, was arrested on June 15 near his farm in Green Isle, Minnesota, following a 43-hour manhunt—the largest in the state’s history. Boelter, who had previously served on Minnesota’s Workforce Development Board alongside Hoffman, was known for his strong anti-abortion views and opposition to LGBTQ rights. He had also worked in security and claimed to have experience in international conflict zones. During the attacks, Boelter impersonated a police officer, wearing a uniform and using a vehicle outfitted to resemble a squad car. Governor Tim Walz condemned the shootings as “targeted political violence” and emphasized the need to stand against such acts. Boelter has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.
