Odisha on high alert to prevent diarrhea outbreak during Rath Yatra

On Monday, Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra announced that the state government is on high alert and implementing comprehensive measures to prevent the spread of diarrheal diseases during the upcoming Rath Yatra festival, set to begin on June 27. The government has launched the ‘Stop Diarrhea’ campaign, focusing on public awareness, sanitation, and health interventions. Efforts include door-to-door distribution of ORS packets and zinc tablets, intensified inspections of food establishments, and disinfection of water sources. Additionally, mobile health teams and awareness vans have been deployed across affected districts to educate the public on hygiene practices and ensure early treatment of symptoms. In anticipation of the Rath Yatra festival commencing on June 27, 2025, the Odisha government has intensified its efforts to ensure public health and safety. Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra emphasized that urban areas, especially those hosting Rath Yatra celebrations, are under heightened surveillance to prevent any disease outbreaks. The department is conducting rigorous monitoring to guarantee public safety and the smooth conduct of the festival. Directives have been issued to maintain adequate water supply and sanitation across all urban regions, with special focus on sensitive zones. Although no concrete evidence of contaminated water has been found, precautionary measures are being taken to avert any health crises. Complementing these efforts, the Health and Family Welfare Department has launched the ‘Stop Diarrhea’ campaign, which will run until July 31. This initiative includes stocking sufficient ORS packets, zinc tablets, and other medicines at Anganwadi centers, community centers, hospitals, and Arogya Mandirs statewide. Health workers are conducting door-to-door visits to distribute awareness pamphlets, ORS, zinc tablets, and medicines, urging the public to adhere to medical advice. These measures aim to contain the spread of diarrheal diseases, particularly in light of recent cases reported in districts like Jajpur, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Dhenkanal, and Cuttack.
