Pune to celebrate Odisha’s Raja tradition with classical dances, message of menstrual hygiene

In Odisha, the arrival of the monsoon has traditionally signaled the start of Raja Parba, a festival that venerates the Earth’s fertility and honors womanhood. The term “Raja” is derived from the Sanskrit word “Rajaswala,” meaning a menstruating woman, reflecting the belief that Mother Earth undergoes her own menstrual cycle during this period. This symbolic observance marks the Earth’s readiness to receive seeds, heralding a season of agricultural abundance. During the festival, women and girls take a respite from daily chores, don new attire, and engage in traditional games and songs, celebrating femininity and the generative power of nature. Agricultural activities are paused, symbolizing respect for the Earth’s rejuvenation. This event celebrates Odisha’s Raja festival, which honors womanhood and Mother Earth’s fertility.“In ancient times, Raja Parba was observed as a four-day period of rest for Mother Earth. During this time, people refrained from loud noises, avoided wearing heavy footwear, and minimized any activities that could burden the earth. It is believed that the trumpeting of an elephant signaled the onset of rainfall, indicating that the earth had become soft and fertile,” explains Sarangi.Consequently, a central feature of the festival is the renowned Odissi dance performance titled Banaste Dakila Gaja (An elephant trumpets in the forest), traditionally associated with Raja celebrations. This piece will be performed by Swagatika Mahapatra, Rashmita Prasad, Smita Das, and Arunima Mohanty, along with disciples of Odissi dancer Madhumita MishraThe “Nritya Navratna” segment of the upcoming Raja Mahotsav in Pune brings together nine classical Indian dance forms, each represented by a distinguished artist from different regions of India.
