Navi Mumbai to Host Global EduCity as Five Top Foreign Universities Set Up Campuses

In a landmark move to transform Navi Mumbai into a global education hub, five prestigious international universities have received Letters of Intent (LoIs) from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish full-fledged campuses in India. The announcement was made during the “Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City” event, attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The five institutions include:

  • University of Aberdeen (UK)
  • University of York (UK)
  • University of Western Australia
  • Illinois Institute of Technology (USA)
  • Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) (Italy)

These campuses will be part of Maharashtra’s ambitious EduCity project, located on a 250-acre plot in Navi Mumbai, near the upcoming international airport. The initiative is a direct outcome of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which allows foreign universities to operate in India with full autonomy. The universities are expected to begin admissions by December 2026, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in high-demand fields like STEM, design, AI, and business. Fees are projected to be 25–30% lower than studying abroad, making global education more accessible to Indian students. Officials emphasized that the government will act as a facilitator, not a funder, and that the institutions will maintain their academic standards, faculty, and admission policies independently. Talks are already underway with additional universities, signaling further expansion of India’s international education footprint.
