Rekha Deserved an Identity: Umrao Jaan Director Reflects on Rekha-Amitabh Saga

Decades after the iconic film Silsila blurred the lines between reel and real life, the legendary pairing of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha continues to stir public imagination. Now, a resurfaced quote from Umrao Jaan director Muzaffar Ali has reignited the conversation. In Yasser Usman’s biography Rekha: The Untold Story, Ali is quoted as saying, “She is and she was in love with him. He should have definitely given her an identity. Amitabh should have married Rekha.” The director recalled how Amitabh would visit the sets of Umrao Jaan during its Delhi shoot, and how Rekha referred to him with the reverence of a wife—using phrases like “inko, inhone” instead of his name. The statement adds a poignant layer to the long-rumored relationship between the two stars, which played out in tabloids and on screen, most notably in Silsila—a film that mirrored their alleged real-life triangle with Jaya Bachchan. While Amitabh has remained silent on the matter, Rekha has occasionally spoken about her admiration for him, though never confirming the full extent of their bond. Ali’s candid remarks stand out in an industry known for its discretion, offering a rare glimpse into a love story that was never officially acknowledged but has become part of Bollywood folklore.
